What if my baby is not in a position for an Anomaly scan, this is another most often raised question by mothers-to-be. The answer is clear—your fetal medicine specialist or the sonographer will not be able to click the high quality pictures of your little one inside. Let us discuss more in the blog.
What happens during the anomaly scan procedure?
The baby will be shown in black and white on the ultrasound screen. Sonographers must keep the screen in a position that allows them to see the baby clearly during the examination, either directly in front of them or at an angle.
If you haven’t already had a pregnancy scan, the sonographer will confirm that you only have one baby and will tell you when your due date is.
Before performing a thorough examination, the sonographer will point out your baby’s heartbeat and various parts of their body, such as their face and hands. Because the sonographer will see your baby’s organs as a cross-section, you may have difficulty distinguishing them.
On the scan, your baby’s bones will be white, while their flesh and internal organs will be grey and speckled. Your baby will be surrounded by black amniotic fluid.
Some practitioners will turn the screen away when you’ve seen your baby for the rest of the scan, only to return at the end to show you views. In some hospitals, a second monitor at the foot of the couch allows you to see the entire scan.
What will happen if my baby is not in a position for an Anomaly scan?
Usually, if your baby is not in the right position on the day of the scan, your sonographer will ask you to repeat the scan. Do not be too concerned about it.
About 15% of scans are repeated due to unfavorable baby position during the day of scanning. The sonographer has typically not seen everything they need to see, which is the most frequent explanation.
