Before going into our topic’s details, let’s have a quick sneak peek of PCOD and its most common effects.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome/Disease (PCOS/PCOD)

Follicular Study: Overview
In general, there are multiple small follicles present in a woman’s ovary during the early days of her menstrual cycle. Out of these, only one follicle will grow every day in size (1 or 2mm) and is called a Dominant Follicle.
This dominant follicle will be capable of releasing a healthy egg that supports your pregnancy.
A follicular study is done to track the growth of this follicle, and the same would be logged in your follicular report .
The doctor will give you an hCG trigger shot when the dominant follicle is about 20mm in size. The hCG helps the follicle rupture and release an egg into your uterus, and this is the ideal time to have intercourse with your partner.
What happens in a follicular Study when you have PCOS?
In a PCOS patient, there is no one follicle to grow in size.
Your doctor needs to give medicines or injections to help with this growth by studying your follicles. This is why a person with PCOS should undergo a follicular study scan.
In contrast to ordinary women, PCOD patients are given these medications or injections during the early stages of their menstrual cycle, and a follicular study is performed to observe the growth of a dominant follicle.
Advantages of a follicular study in PCOS patient:
There are two main advantages of follicular study in PCOS is
- The injection allows the appearance of a dominant follicle which releases a quality egg to be fertilized.
- The menstrual cycle gets regularized because ovulation happens.
